Clinton D. Mortimer was a neighbor to the farm in Long Rapids Township, Michigan. He died about 1954 at age 90. Here is his obiturary.
Clinton D. Mortimer, 90, a native of Alpena and pioneer lumberjack, died Sunday afternoon at University Hospital, where he had been a patient for the past week. He previously had been at Alpena Hospital since May 30.
The body is at the Wachterhauser funeral home where service(s) will be held Wednesday at 2:30, the Rev. Henry Schmidt of the Free Methodist church officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.
Mr. Mortimer was born just across Chisholm St. from the Alpena Hotel. In a shop in back of his birthplace, his father, Thomas, made all the caskets made in Alpena until the time of the smallpox epidemic. Mr. Mortimer’s memory dated back to the time when the riverfront was the center of activities in this area. There were woods where Lockwood St. now runs and the existing streets were sawdust or bark.
Mr. Mortimer was a member of the Bird’s Nest, the City’s first Sunday school class at the Congregational Church. His sister, the late Mrs. R. J. Crable, was reportedly the first white girl born in Alpena. A pioneer lumberjack, Mr. Mortimer started at the age of 11. He moved to Long Rapids in 1915 and engaged in farming, retiring in 1937. He spent his entire life in Alpena County and was a major source of information for those interested in Alpena lore.
Surviving is his wife, the former Ann Campbell, to whom he was married July 1, 1890, in Alpena. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Grace C. Labadie, Bellaire, Mich., and Mrs. Marguerite Brandt, Hillman; a son , Fred D. , Alpena; 15 grandchildren, 32 great great grandchildren and one great great great grandson. A daughter, Mrs. Ernest Himes, died in 1944.
