Seeking info on James Gardiner, b. 1839

My Great-great-grandfather, James Gardiner was born in 1839 in Ireland, to two Scottish parents, according to the 1880 census in Alpena, MI.

He was married to Margret Dunham at the time, who later died, and he remarried Harriet (unknown). He immigrated the US via Canada in 1865.

His children (surviving to adulthood) were: Albert, Jane, Arthur J. and James Perry (also known as Perry James Gardiner, my great-grandfather). By his later marriage, there was also a daughter, Emma.

I'm at a deadend. I now live in the UK, but don't have enough info about where he was from or who his parents were in order to track him down here. I know that others have traced his wife Margret back many generations, but I can find no one that has details on James.

Thanks much,

--Todd Gardiner
