Has anyone found out the name of Petronila Moctezuma's parents? I found confrimation that she is indeed the granddaughter of Motecuhzoma Xocoyotzin, AKA Montezuma II, in the book Genealogia de Nochistlan, chapter 58, which states that "es bien reconocido que se reconoce como nieta del Emperador..." But does not provide the actual parental link. However, the book does provide a name that is new to me, de Siordia. Several children of Maria de Gabay and Pedro Fernandez de Vaulus bare the name de Siordia, also spelled ciordia. As we have seen, many children do not bare the names of their parents in this period, but rather of their grand parents, would it not be logical to assume that Siordia is the name of the parents of either Maria Gabay, or Pedro Fernandez de Vaulus? I would think the presumption would favor the Gabays, rather than the Vaulus side of the family, since we have so many documented names for the Vaulus. Vaulus seems to be an Eastern European, or Germanic name. I don't know what the derivation of Gabay is, unless it is derived from Garay, which is a more common Hispanic name than Gabay, which is practically extinct. I think we need to follow every lead to track Petronila Moctezuma down more precisely. I leave for Mexico this Wednesday to see what I can unearth there. Notify Administrator about this message?
