Mr. A C Mettler, Frick Bldg, Pitts. 1912
I have a small mystery to be solved by someone posting here.
While I was perusing websites of counties in Nova Scotia, Canada, I brought up the site for Pictou County at - http://www.rootsweb.com/~nspictou/http://www.rootsweb.com/~nspictou/ - and right at the top of the front page is a charming postcard photo of the largest town New Glasgow NS around 1911/2. The addressee is shown as "Mr. A.C. Mettler, 1508 Frick Bldg. Pittsburg, Penna, USA".
The message on the back of the postcard reads: "This is it and it's a wonder sure - they have a law here that autos are allowed on the streets only on Friday afternons - Have had great weather and feeling fine."
The message is signed simply "Al" and is dated 2 June 1912.
Does anyone posting here know who A.C. Mettler was ? I assume the Frick Bldg was his office location in Pittsburg. What might have been his occupation ? Was A.C. known as "Al" (or perhaps Asher ?) and might the writer have been his son, nephew, or perhaps a cousin ?
Another hint - Pictou County NS had lots of (soft) coal mines which were active in the early 1900's, as well as some steel plants. Since Pittsburg was the "steel capital of the world" at that time, was there some business connection between Pittsburg, PA and New Glasgow, NS at that time ? Who were these Mettler's and how did they connect to the steel or coal business ? There never were any Mettler people actually liviing in NS from what I know of existing records.
On another note, Pictou County, NS was first settled in 1767 by folks from PA (sailed from Philadelphia) who arrived on the "Betsey". In 1773, the first of thousands of Scottish and Irish settlers started to arrive. Pictou County continues to celebrate its heritage with many lively festivals every year.
Who will be the first to "solve the mystery" of Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada ?
