Peter Mettler was born Jan. 1, 1837 in the tiny village of Hundheim, Kreis (county) Bernkastel, the Rhineland. He was the son of Anton and ElizabethMettler. At the time of his birth, there was no such country as Germany; just numerous German-speaking states.. Hundheim was in a region under the control of Prussia, and was near the Mosel River, Trier, and Luxemburg.
Peter's elder sister was my great-grandmother. (I am a 74 year old lady.)was here first, about 1850, and Peter came about 1856/57, at the age of 19 or 20.He was living inCincinatti when he volunteered for the UnionArmy at the age of 24 on June 19/20, 1861. He enlisted for three years in Company "K", Fifth Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment., commanded by Colonel Dunning. I wille-mail more.Florence Mumford
