SARAH METCALFE DIES Mrs.Sarah Metcalfe, wife of the late Alex Metcalfe, sr. died Sunday morning at her farm home northeast of Wilsey, where she had resided for 43 years. She was 70 years old. Mrs. Metcalfe was born in Kentucky, September 14, 1885, and came with her parents to Kansas in a covered wagon at the age of 5. She was married to Alex Metcalfe in Council Grove in 1904. He preceeded her in death in 1941. She had been in failing health the past several years. However, she had kept up her housework to the time of her death and passed away quietly in her sleep early Sunday. Her family went to Garden City when it came to Kansas, but after 18 months, during which period there was a severe drouth, it came back to Diamond Springs. Mrs. Metcalfe attended school at Osawatomie. All of her married life was spent in Morris county, the family living at Diamond Springs for a few years before moving to the place where she lived at the time of her death. Surviving her are three sons. They are Alex Metcalfe of the home, Ralph Metcalfe of Lodge Grass, Mont., and Clarence Metcalfe of Cut Bank, Mont. She leaves also six grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Parker of Colorado Springs and Mrs. Amos L. White of Arcadia, Calif., and three brothers, James F. DeSpain of Liberal, Henry L. DeSpain of Wichita and Luther L. DeSpain of Mount Carrol, Ill. An infant daughter, Helen Margaret, died in 1924. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Block Funeral Home in Council Grove. Mr. Jess Jones, a minister with Jehovah Witnesses , Emporia, will be in charge of the services. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Taken from Council Grove Republican, Monday April 23, 1956
