Circa 1880s photo of an elderly Metcalf woman from Viroqua, WI
I purchased the subject undated studio portrait that has been trimmed to fit an oval frame.Handwritten on the back of the mount is (some words cut off):
"Metcalf

The only likely candidate I can find on ancestry.com is Mary J. Metcalf (maiden name unknown), born May 1819 in OH, married to a wagon maker, James T. Metcalf, born about 1817 in OH.She is listed in the 1870 Census data for Viroqua, Vernon Co., OH; and the 1900 Census data for Franklin, Vernon Co., OH.At the time of the 1900 enumeration, Mary was an 81-year-old widow; she had 9 children, 7 of them still living at that time.
