Irene,
I am not related to the Messicks but I am doing some research for a friend. My friend's Aunt Wilma I. Messick Studebaker passed away on March 11,2003.She is not his biological aunt but his aunt by marriage through his uncle(her first husband Lester Leech) When she died they found an old framed portrait drawing of a man in her shed. Her son did not know who the portrait was of and said he didn't want it, he gave it to my friend. My friend opened the back of the frame to see if there was possibly any information on the back. There was nothing written on the back but there was part of an old Iowa newspaper in it from the year 1896.There was nothing significant in the paper and we assume that is was placed in the frame to provide support for the drawing at the time that it was framed. My friend gave me the obituary of his Aunt and a copy of the drawing and asked if I could do some research and try to find out who it is.It is probable that the drawing was framed in 1896 in Iowa and is probably a Messick.
In Wilma's obituary it says that she was born in Eads,Co on March 22, 1913 and that she was the daughter of George W. Messick and Hazel F. Kesler Messick.
I believe it is possible that her father is the George W. Messick that you name as the son of Edward Lee Messick(your Grandfather)and Brother of your father John which would make you and Wilma first cousins. If it is the same George W.Messick,I believe that it is very likely that the drawing is of your Grandfather Edward Lee Messick. The man appears to be an his mid 30's to early 40's which does fit with the age of Edward Lee Messick in the year 1896.
Please respond if you have any information or if you believe that there is a connection. I would be happy to scan and send you a copy of the drawing.Maybe you could identify the man.
Thanks,
Angela
