After looking at this information I would request information from the area genalogical society for records of the families below.
1900 Census of NJ, somerset, North Plainfield Boro
Charles S. Messenger H/W born Jan 1876 age 24 married 4 yearsEmployment Butcher
Lillie Messenger Wifeborn Oct 1877 2 children 2 living
Charles R.Messenger Son August 1897
May or Mary Messenger daughter Sept 1899
By this record I would look for all Messenger in 1880's in NJ All born NJ this can be wrong depending on who gave the information also if he died in the area you maybe able to find is cemetery records and funeral homes records.

this young man work as Farm labor
