Hi Beth,

Thanks for the info. I'm pretty sure I have Susanna's 1850 Census. There is a Susanna R. Mertz, age 17 living in Northampton Co. with John and Sussannah Dech (or Deck). Based on their ages, they could be her grandparents, or perhaps just some elderly couple she was living with. Given the right middle initial and location or Northampton, I think this is a more likely record for her. Montour is much farther away.

In 1840, there is a Jacob Mertz and a John Mertz living in Northampton Co., both with daughters age 5-10. Neither of them appears to be living in Pennsylvania in 1850. Either could possibly be Susannah's father. Another possibility is that her parents died even earlier. In 1840, John Dech is listed as living with two young females, one between 5-10 and the other 10-15. The younger could be Susannah.

But all this is guessing. I have no record that links her to anyone else. My grandmother told me she recalled that she had a brother who was a minister. But that is all I have.
