I've been doing a little more research and have discovered that George Merryman wasn't immediately from England. His wife, Kathleen L Cashel was from England. According to the 1920 Census, she arrived in 1900, and George was born in Maryland, as were his parents. However, that's as far back as we can trace. At that time, George and Kathleen were living in Wayne County, Michigan. On that Census, it lists their children being Norman, Margarite, Helen and Virginia. The Census was taken in Jan 1920 and my grandfather, Arthur Henry Merryman, was not born until March 17, 1920. Kathleen died then during childbirth, apparently.
As I said in my previous post, George Merryman contracted tuberculosis approximately 4 years later and was sent to the Detroit Tuberculosis Sanitarium, and all of the children were orphaned and split up. In the 1930 census, George Merryman is on the patient list for the sanitarium (however we're not sure when he eventually died -- not too long after, I'm assuming), Norman is listed as being a boarder with William I and Grace G Duckert, and Helen and Virginia are both listed as living in the Salvation Army Home. I can not find any records for Margarite after the 1920 Census, and I can not find any records at ALL for my grandfather, Arthur Henry.
I'm at another standstill. I'd like to find out what happened to Norman, Margarite, Helen and Virginia, and/or find out the names of George's parents so I can continue going back. ANY help is greatly appreciated.
