Tennessee did become a state in 1796. Records are pretty bad until 1850 then dissappear during the Civil War years to come back in 1870. My Richardson family starts in VA in 1797 with Murry/Mury/Murray. Murry is listed in the 1820 TN census. The names Murry, Jesse and James are frequent in the family. I descend from Murray Jessie Richardson born 1854. A cousin and I both have found the first Murry's father listed as J. Richardson, but could not connect them with facts due to bad records kept back then. Paralee Ann Merryman was born in 1829 and died in 1878, but in the 1870 census she is listed as Malinda (same age). Oh yes, in both 1850 and 1870 census John W. Richardson lives very close to Jesse T. Merryman and family in Nashville's 21st District.
