Thanks for those comments, Karen. I have the booklet Merrimans and Tracys, Pioneer Community Builders, which I purchased from Miss Tracy many years ago. I am aware of the family legends and traditions regarding the background of William MERRYMAN who d. 12 May 1844 in the 87th year of his age [i.e., age 86). What I was attempting to do was to analyze the available evidence in seeking his origins. It has been claimed by some that he was a son of William MERRYMAN (born poss. 1702-1705), son of Charles. The latter William m. Margaret LANE by 11/24/1726 when their daughter Jemima was born. The evidence on record proves that Wm. and Margaret had Jemima, Margaret, William (born 1727 or 1728; possibly the one who died in Balto. Co. c. 1805), George, Joanna and Chloe (who m. a Bazil Tracy). I have not been able to find any evidence that Wm. and Margaret were the parents of children named Delilah and Keziah. Nor have I found any evidence that Wm. either married a second time, or had children by another wife. In order to obtain a print from microfilm of William MERRYMAN's obituary, contact DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. Cite the 5 July 1844 issue (Vol. 11, p. 48) of The Western Christian Advocate, as well as William's date of death. When I made my requests in 1999, I was able to do it via E-mail to Linda Butler at: LBUTLER@DEPAUW.EDU I received a reply from their Archives and Special Collections section: archives@depauw.edu Because that was 6 years ago, you might want to check their website before making your request. I found their charges reasonable - especially when I was able to cite the vol. and page numbers. If you do obtain a copy of William's obituary, I would appreciate your sending me a copy of your copy.
