What I have in almost 15 years of work on the Merryman Family of Clarion County, Pa is a seemingly insoluable puzzle. The apparent progenitor of the Merryman line in this county is Joshua Merryman (3 July 1815 - 5 Nov. 1857) and his wife, Sarah Beck, b. circa 1826, a daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth Beck, from Ireland. Both Joshua and Sarah were born in PA. According to the 1850 census for Beaver township, Joshua was a boat builder by trade. Their 2 yr old son, Alvin was also listed in this census. Joshua and sarah had the following children: Alvin Alexander Merryman (1848-1932), married Martha Ann Wyman (1848-1912), a daughter of William Wyman (1816-1884) and Maria Nuthill; John Coulter Merryman (1850-1933), married Mary Magee (1859-1949), a daughter of William A. Magee and Barbara Barnhardt; Elizabeth Alice Merryman (1851-?), married William E. Finnefrock (1841-1917), a son of Jacob Finefrock and Esther Kifer; David Wesley Merryman (1855-1934), married Clara Anna Flack, a daughter of William Harris Flack and Mary Ann Miller. I have circumstantial evidence that the "Coulter" in J.C. Merryman's name may be a family name, as the Coulter family in central PA seemed to mix with the Merryman (Meriman) family, but I can't pin it down. I've been trying to find Joshua's parents and siblings with no luck. I've been doing this for 15 years so far... Joshua is laid to rest in Fairview (also called Mt. Pleasant or Mt. Zion) cemetery on the Piney-Licking township border in Clarion County. We don't know where Sarah is buried or when she died. We do know Joshua and Sarah raised their family in Piney township.. at least until his untimely death at the far-too-young age of 42 years. Thus far I can only guess at a cause of death.. possibly working near the Clarion river as a boatwright in the harsh winter climate of the region coupled with the influenza epidemic that was wide-spread in 1857. It's just a guess. If ***ANY*** of this sounds at ***ALL*** familiar... even if its just a rumor or a story you thought you heard... PLEASE CONTACT ME DIRECTLY at my new email address: Michael.D.C.Merryman@gmail.com ...and I will respond immediately!!! If you're related to the Merryman line through one of the other family lines listed (maybe a spouse of one of the Merryman children), also please contact me and we can exchange information. Many thanks for reading and hopefully writing me back. In an ideal circumstance, I can complete the family tree and meet some new cousins! Michael D. C. Merryman (If there is a direct match to the Merryman line, call me at home and leave a message on my answering machine. Make sure you mention "family tree" or I may not get the message! 724-229-0733) Notify Administrator about this message?
