Maryn,

Will try to help. My Merrifield files are a compilation of
data from many researchers over the years & my own research
to find the people in these files. It doesn't help that the
people who did the files-didn't put where they found the
data to help later researchers who want to check them--
coupled with about 15 different spellings of the Merrifield
name. I chose Merrifield to commonize the name because that
is how my Grandmother's family spelled it. I retain the
original spelling that is found on the record also-with
referance where found when I put it on the family group
sheets in my d/base. Never used to do this- and had one
heck of atime trying to find the records again!!

My Thomas Merryfield Merrifield file is this:

This John buried with Thomas & Eunice; Samuel &
Sarah- researchers said is the John Merrifield/
Merryfield/Maryfield who filed for his Rev War
pension in Macoupin Co, IL. These are the Mass
branch of the family.

9. Dau b ca 1787

10 Son b ca 1794 Oh

These Merrifield families are so mixed up by early
researchers- I doubt if they are ever straightened out.
Plus the fact that people add things to their files with
? marks- share those files & the person receiveing the file
deletes the ? mark and says fact when not proven. Also-
there is a tree on ancestry.com by aaroncrowe@earthlink.com
that when I emailed him about it- my email came back.

He has Mary Elizabeth Overington as wife of Samuel
Merryfield Sr (father of Samuel "Indian Sam"). Then he links
Samuel to Benjamin Merrifield, a descendant of Henry
Merrifield who came to Mass in the mid-1600s from Antigua.
I have seen files that claim that Samuel Sr was born a
specific date 1720 in Croate, England. With my 35+ years
of researching this family- I have never seen anything like
that. The people who claim this-won't post the source of
that data. There has to be a source put out for others to
see. That is what is wrong with all the gen. being done-
so many is willing to accept data without documentation!!
Then when records are presented contray to the accepted
genealogy- the records are wrong- not the incomplete "tree"

An early record in Frederick Co, Va says Samuel Merryfield
was witness on a woman's will who lived at Brandywine Hnd
before moving to Frederick Co, Va.- don't remember the
date of that record. I am sure it is in Pam's file IF I
would check it (she is a descendant of James & Hannah
Haines Merrifield).

From Pam- I also received the copy of the 1765 record of
Frederick Co, Va were Samuel & Mary M. (not Elizabeth)
Merryfield left their land and household good to Samuel Jr
and names all their children- John, Thomas, Richard,
Alexander, Mary, Elizabeth, Dinah & Rachel. There is some-
thing about the date of the record & the birth date of
Alexander Merrifield (m Rachael Boone 1787 Jefferson Co, Ky)
The dates are such that it is just before or just after
the date Alexander was born. The probability of a woman
of Mary M.'s age (b 1717-1720) having a child at that date
is highly unlikely. Plus add the fact that a researcher of
my Essex Family has found an Alexander Merrifield (etc) of
the age to be the Alexander of the will date.

Lot of new data & it throws a further wrench into the
established genealogy that everyone copies without trying
to prove it!! I am contrary- I am trying to put factual
data with the people in the "established" genealogy & am
finding people left out (don't know how they fit); can't
find people they say is there; etc, etc, etc. For every
question I answer- several more is posed & begs an answer!!
So, I keep trying!!!

Mary
