Back to Prettyman Merry, 1718

I have recently come across some interesting information on the Prettyman family of Virginia, during the period 1650-1700, which I have posted in the Prettyman forum.

While rummaging around the Internet for those details, I found some more facts from the 1718 will of Thomas Merry, father of Prettyman Merry. Among the legatees, whom I have not seen listed before, are a Thomas Hatton and a Margaret Hatton. Their relationship is not given in the transcription I found online. The will also mentions “cousins” William Brasey and Mary Brasey.

Do a search for Hatton in this Genforum and you will find several intriguing references, especially those from Bellinda Myrick-Barnett in March 2009. She has found John Hatton, shipbuilder, arriving in Jamestown in 1613, and later residing or owning property in Elizabeth City and Norfolk County, Virginia – the same locations that Merry family members can be found during the same period.

We know that there was a Thomas Merry who arrived in Jamestown about 1620 and was found in the 1624 “muster” of Virginia living near Kecoughtan (later called Elizabeth City) . This was on the north side of the James, “The River Where America Began” according to the title of the best recent book about Virginia history. Norfolk County is just across the river from Elizabeth City, on the south bank. Adjacent to Norfolk County but upriver is Isle of Wight County, where Thomas Merry also owned land. (Some of the county names and boundaries have since changed.)

I have also posted about the Brasey / Bracey / Bressie families. Posts in the Bracey forum indicate that this Virginia family was among the early Quakers; Thomas Merry, who relocated from Virginia to Maryland as a Puritan, eventually became a Quaker.
