No further candidates for the William of 1654 … but a related query: I have long been intrigued by some later MERRYs who are merchants in Boston. Years ago I saw some details from ‘The Boston Directory’ 1800-1816 on Ancestry.com. Jonathan Merry and Daniel Merry are merchants at Merry’s Wharf (with Ship St. sometimes mentioned). Jonathan seems also to have a house in Salem St. and there is also a Prudence Merry who seems to be running a boarding house in North Center St. For many years I assumed these were somehow descendents of Walter Merry, shipwright, operating from the same wharf. However, I then noticed that these individuals could well be certain descendents of Joseph Merry (1607-1710), as recorded in Dr. Charles Bank’s ‘Merry Family of Martha’s Vineyard’. http://history.vineyard.net/merry.htm Namely (with ID Nos for Banks): '31. JONATHAN MERRY, (Samuel,3-2 Joseph1), b. abt. 1735; res. T., m. JANE DAGGETT (102). Nothing further known except that he was living in 1810 and his wife or widow was alive in 1821. He served in Sea Coast Defence.' And one of his sons: '73. DANIEL, b. (1775); m. Mrs. PRUDENCE (Butler) (194) NORTON.' Although supposedly resident in Tisbury (at some point), I think Jonathan's also trading from Boston. So, is his wharf a totally different place to Walter Merry’s wharf of the 1630-50s? Or is there a connection between these two families (Joseph of MV and Walter the shipwright of Boston) which we have not yet unearthed? I had put all this on a ‘back burner’, but now Bob’s find has raised an intriguing question, which has reminded me of other intriguing questions ... Sonia Notify Administrator about this message?
