Who should do it: . only males with the Merry (or similar) surname. . concentrate on the oldest Merry male available, if possible, and only do younger males if you feel you need confirmation - closely related people should be exactly the same. (I am exactly the same as my fifth cousin - the only other Merry who I know has been tested - our common ancestor was born in 1774 in Oxfordshire.) How to go about getting DNA tests: . Google for a provider using 'DNA testing for genealogy' - I hesitate to name companies on this forum . Wikipedia is a good source of background information. . most major providers do similar tests, but there are differences. If you are interested in the ancient history of your DNA, try and choose a provider which also does SNP tests. . if you can afford it, try and have a minimum of 37 markers tested. If cost is a factor, see if other relatives will contribute. . the provider will send you a package with instructions for taking an oral 'scraping' (absolutely painless!) using a small brush. . be patient! This testing is changing at a very rapid rate and you may find results arrive over a few months. Hope this helps. Notify Administrator about this message?
