I can't verify your question, but may be able to provide a path for your research. Here is my suggestion:
Grab a male brother or cousin from your line whose last name is Merritt.
Join him to the Merritt DNA project. Get his DNA on record. Do that by enrolling him here:
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/merritt/order
or contact me to help (I am the Merritt DNA coordinator)
Once his results are on file, compare them with the Wetzel DNA project which you can find here:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/wetzel/default.aspx?section=yresults
No garantees, but you might get lucky and find your original Wetzel line with this process. I notice that they have at least one W VA Wetzel in their project.
This route just uses the Merritt DNA project to get the order discount for the lab test. Then it gives you some numbers to work with, that might lead you back to the right people. Hope this helps!
