You might also notice that Ludwella was born in Maine, perhaps suggesting a migration path for John. And I find a marriage in 1872 in Chelsea, MA for a "Ludey V. Merritt", age 18, birth Isleborough, Maine, parents John I and Olive, which is probably her. Husband is Charles H Flood, Jr.
