Looks like you're my mom's 5th cousin, Paul.

I looked in Massachusetts Vital Records on the newenglandancestors.org website, and found the following data:

John I. Merritt, age 30, married Catherine McDonald, age 20, on June 1, 1868 in Boston. John's 2nd marriage. (son Frank L's birth the following year lists his mother as Catherine McDonough, again of England?) John's parents listed as Enoch and Laney and place of birth as Nova Scotia. Catherine's parents listed as Thomas and Catherine, and place of birth as England.

Death record for John I. Merritt, Dec 10th, 1908, where his age is listed as just 60, his place of birth is listed as Annapolis, NS, his father's name is listed as Enoch, and Enoch's place of birth as New York. No data on his mother.

Enoch Merritt is a son of my ancestor Nehemiah Merritt, who settled in Granville, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. The following site lists Enoch's family, including a son John Isaac Merritt, born June 26, 1832 to Enoch Merritt and his 2nd wife Magdalena "Laney" Anthony, who had also been his sister-in-law, as Enoch's first wife was her sister Martha Anthony. I descend from Enoch's brother James Merritt, via James' son William H Merritt, who moved to Newburyport, MA around 1850. Enoch's brother William Merritt (uncle to both your John I. Merritt and my William H. Merritt) also moved to Newburyport around the same time.
