Hi Paul, You are most likely a descendent of Thomas Merritt born 1634 in Yorkshire, came to Cambridge MA probably as Marrett in 1635 with his father Thomas built a house in Wethersfield, CT in 1632 and went to Rye, NY in 1672 with his large family. Many of his descendents were loyalists and left for Ontario or Nova Scotia (now New Brunswick) after the Revolution. I looked in Revised Merritt Records, by Douglas Merritt and haven't yet found your John. There's an online tree of Canadian Merritts which might include him.
Also Jim Merritt has several of us DNA tested if you want to see if you are related. We had a reunion in the Greenwich/Rye area in 2007 which was fun. Keep in touch.
