It is true that many Merrit families have their roots in France. The French spellings include: Marriette, Marriot, Merriot, Mariette. As they traveled to England or America, they often anglicized their names to Merrit or Merritt. I am descended from one of those French lines who were Huguenots, and escaped to England before coming to America.
What's also interesting is that there are English Merritts who DO NOT HAVE FRENCH ROOTS. I am also descended from one of those English Merritt families.
