I have been researching my Gx4 grandfather, Benjamin Merritt (b ca 1776 NC), for years now. He is enumerated on the 1800 Montgomery County, NC census along with a John Merritt (b ca 1745-55) whom I believe to be his father. Benjamin is enumerated on the 1810 Montgomery County, NC census but John is gone.
Benjamin showed up in 1820 Wilson County, TN about the time that James Merritt/Nancy Coggins family came to Wilson County from Moore County, NC. Benjamin is the only one not clamimed by the James Merritt who is father of the Wilson County group. I believe my Benjamin is the nephew of James Merritt and his father, John, the brother of James.
I believe I have read that it is believed the father of James Merritt is Stephen Merritt. I know Stephen Merritt was granted land in TN but not sure if he actually came to TN.
I have spent weeks researching the Wilson County Merritt's looking for something to definitely connect him but have not done so as of yet.
I'm not sure if I have all the children listed for James/Nancy Coggins Merritt. I have John W., Mark, Molly, James, Lewis, Nancy, Sarah, Priscilla, Rhoda, Obediah, Silas & Sylvanus. I believe I read somewhere where they had 14 children, I have 12 thus far.
I still need children for John W. and Elizabeth Arundel.
I have 7 children listed for Mark.
I still need children of Moses Caraway & Molly Merritt..I only have Merritt Caraway listed.
I still need children of James & Mary Coggins..I have Elias thus far.
I still need children of Daniel Ragsdale and Nancy Merritt.
I still need children of Daniel Ragsdale and Sarah Merritt.
I still need children of Asa Ragsdale & Priscilla..I have 3 thus far.
I have 4 children for Obediah & Priscilla Clemmons.
I need children for Silas Merritt & Nancy Edwards.
For Sylvanus I have 6 children.
If anyone can help me out with any of the above information I would appreciate it. Also if anyone has any knowledge of the parents or siblings of James, I would love hearing from them. I know the Coggins family had ties to Montgomery County, NC so it just seems highly possible that my Benjamin fits in here.
