Daniel Merritt and Caroline Manning - Kansas
Some years ago, a fellow Manning/Findley researcher (Bonnie Findley) received a letter from Sarah Merritt Smith of Wichita, Kansas which read in part "my great uncle Daniel married Caroline Manning, dau of Jowl and Elizabeth Manning.""Daniel and Caroline were part of the family that made the trip to Kansas in 1875.Their dau Elizabeth married Elijah Smith's son, who was my husband's gr-grandfather.Either two or three of Daniel's children stayed in Alabama. My grandfather, John, married Mary Manning, dau of Jackson Manning.Family tradition is that John went back to Alabama to settle some land titles and met Mary and when he left to go back to Kansas she came with him. They must not have married in Alabama as the family bible my aunt had had them married in Prairie, Kansas. For many years I thought Jackson was Jowl's brother but I am now thinking he is his son".
I am a descendant of Joel Manning and am trying to find out more information about the family of Daniel Merritt and Caroline Manning. We no longer have Sarah Merritt Smith's address.Any help would be appreciated. The only info we have at this time is is the excerpts from the letter and the following census:
1850 CALHOUN CO., FLORIDA census:
Daniel Merritt, 22, Ala.
Caroline Merritt, 20, Ala
(male) Merritt, 1, Fla.
Elizabeth Maning, 49, SC. (wife of Joel Manning)
Jacob Maning, 18, Ala. (son of Joel
thanks,
