Leigh and other Canadian Merritts,
4 pages A16-A18 plus a newspaper clipping mentioned back in June '01 is in front of me.I dug them back out of the attic crawl space. This information is said to be compiled by Douglas Merritt of Rhinebeck, NY 1916.Brackets indicate generation.
On page A17:
I. Thomas (1) Merritt children were John, Joseph, Ephrian, Isaac, Thomas (2)
II. Thomas (2) about 1670 d 1719 children: Thomas(3), Edward (3) and John (3)
III. Thomas (3) children: Thomas (4), Joseph(4).

Jedediah and Emily's children: William Hamilton (8) b 1865, Catherine Welland b 1866, Jedediah Prescott b 1868, Thomas Shubal (8) b 1870, Louis Alexander b 1872, Helen Emily b 1873, Charles Prendergast b 1875, John Octavius b 1877.
On page A17 at top starts to follow line
Thomas (2) > John Merritt (3).{does not john's wife).

Caleb(4) {no wife listed). Children Danied (5) m 1763 Rebecca Green d 1806, Ruben (5) cousin of Thomas (5) mar Mary Anderson.
That does it for the genealogical outline typed by Anna Hayward. However are 1 3/4 pages single spaced typed of notes that follow and seemed to be authored by Douglas Merritt. One paragraph talks about Thomas (4) who gave a bond to Nathan(4) for L 160 and how he went to NS with his sons and was buried in King St. Cemetery.Next paragraph about Thomas (5) a cornet in Queen's Rangers who settled at 12 miles Creek, was Sheriff Lincoln County, Major Commander of Cavalry Niagara District War and buried in St. Georges cemetery, St. Catherines tablet on tower of church.Another paragraph about Nathan (4) and Dinah family. This concerns debts, land transfers to other Merritts in NY.Another paragraph about Shubal (5)who was the outlaw, my guess he was also a Loyalist of Stamford.Another sentence about Nehemiah Merritt (5) a man of greath wealth died in St John.A paragraph on William (5)who married Annie Mead who joined American army and his land in Canada was confiscated. He died in Lockport NY and had two adopted children. A sentence on Daniel (5) deed, marriage information. Sentence on Rueben (5) in American army taken prisoner but paroled because of Thomas (5). Sentence on Abraham (5) with info on Ruth and land transfer in NY.Paragraph on William (6) Lt in Niagrar Light Dragoons, Capt of Provincial Dragoons; prisoner at Lundy's Lane in 1812. Constructor of Welland Canal, Niagara Suspension Bridge and Wlland railway etc. Buried in Victoria Lawn Cemetery St. Catherines near Jedediah Merritt.
The 12 column inches of yellow newspaper clipping is noted Ontario Intelligenss March 20, 1947.It talks about a bible that is 250 years old.Says itcomes from Merritt brothers George, Gideon and John who came from England and settled in NY.After years of abuse for supporting the King, they came to Canada.About 1800 George left the US and settled first in Kingston and then {I think} Belleville. He sold his farm to Joseph {his son}.Joseph died beforehis father but his son Calvin lived at the farm.Evident Calvin had not children but adopted a nephew, Samuel Lloyd. The owner of the bible is the wife of Samuel Lloyd.
Hope this helps.I am trying to make an HTML scan of these pages.Canadian Merrits: Email me if you are interested.
