St. Charles (Illinois) Chronicle
Jan. 29, 1920
Mrs. Eliza Ward
The funeral of Mrs. Eliza Ward, of South Hollywood, California, formerly of St. Charles, was held at the Hollywood Cemetery Chapel Tuesday morning, January 20, 1920. Mrs. Justin L. Ward, whose maiden name was Eliza Merriman, was born in Boston, Lincolnshire, England, August 14, 1834. She departed this life on January 18, 1920 at the ripe age of 85 and one half years. Her husband, Justin L. Ward, died at St. Charles 18 years prior to her death. She came to the United States from England when nine years old. She was married to Justin L. Ward in October 1851 at the youthful age of 17. Both charter members of St. Charles Free Methodist church. They had four children, all of whom survive and live in or near Los Angeles, Calif. They are Mrs. Samson Ferson, Mrs. Richard B. Hazelhurst, Mrs. Shelly Bond and Wilfred E. Ward. In 1904 Mrs. Ward left St. Charles and went to reside with her son in Los Angeles, Calif., where she remained until her death. Ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Ward had enjoyed excellent health until six months ago, when she began to rapidly fail. She had been very active, had walked miles, went often to the city and took a keen interest in politics, voting at every election. In 1901 Mr. and Mrs. Ward celebrated their golden wedding in St. Charles, which was largely attended by the relatives. Two weeks before her death her grandson, Charles B. Hazelhurst of Elgin, arrived in California, thus being present with five other grandchildren to act as pallbearer. The funeral service was simple. Her remains were laid to rest in one of the most beautiful cemeteries, green slopes, smooth paths, wonderful flowers, near the base of a large date palm which she so loved. It is planned to some day remove her husband’s remains from the old St. Charles south cemetery to California.
