I came across your MERRIMAN query and would like to help you locate the Charles M. MERRIMAN you seek. There are a lot of MERRIMANs that came from NY to MI in the mid-1800s ... and many of them are named Charles! Do you have any additional information re your Charles? Birth date, place of birth (specific to town/county in NY), Parents' names, spouse, etc.? That would certainly help narrow the field. Here are just a few of the Charles MERRIMANs I found:
+ Charles M. MERRIMAN - b. c1825 in NY - was a horticulturist on a fruit farm in Muskegon County, MI. He had a daughter names Maria/Mina? MERRIMAN Austin. In 1900 and 1910 Federal Census. In 1900 and 1910 Federal Census.
+ Charles MERRIMAN - b. c1819 in NY - married Permelia (Pamela?)(HENDERSON?) late in life. Living in Jackson, Jackson County, MI at time of 1850 census.
+ Charles MERRIMAN - b. 16 February 1876 in MI - Parents: Willis L. MERRIMAN and Nancy E. OLMSTEAD (they were both born in NY - Lived in Oakland County, MI) - Married: Julia LOOMIS in 1901 - Lived in Kent County, MI area.
+ Charles M. MERRIMAN - Working in Grand Rapids, Kent County, MI 1889-1890 - Worked for H. S. Schreiner Co. in Lowell, MI as a harnessmaker. In the 1889-1890 Grand Rapids City Directory.
There are other Charles as well.
My MERRIMAN line is through Zepheny MERRIMAN and his wife, Esther PLUM. They had 5 children:
1) Mary Elvira Plum MERRIMAN - b. October 1810 - NY;
2) Elisha Granison MERRRIMAN - b. January 1813 in Onondaga County, NY;
3) Halsey Oswin MERRIMAN (my GG-Grandfather) - b. February 1815 in Otisco, Onondaga County, NY - Lived most of his life in Peoria, Peoria, IL;
4) Walter MERRIMAN - b. August 1817 in NY - Lived in Texas for much of his adult life;
5) Amos Lee MERRIMAN - b. January 1823 in Otisco, Onondaga, NY - Lived much of his life in Peoria in law partnership with Halsey Oswin MERRIMAN;
6) Chloe MERRIMAN - b. March 1827 in Onondaga County, NY. I believe this is the chloe who was mentally and/or physically impaired.
I have not located a Charles / Charles M. in Zepheny's family direct family (sons and daughters). I hope this helped somewhat. Please let me know if you have additional info on Charles M. MERRIMAN.
