Thanks to Jeanette Nelson's research, it has now been determined the German name Meerwarth (also shown as Meerwardt or Merwart) came to America with Georg Jakob Meerwarth from Brahnbrucken, Karlshrue, Baden, Germany who emigrated c1852 with his wife Louisa Schmidt and six children. At some point after arriving in America, the name was Americanized to Meriwether. The original immigrant, who changed his name to Jacob Meriwether died in Louisville, KY in 1868. Jeanette Nelson has also found German ancestry of the immigrant, Jacob Meerwarth, back to his great-grandfather.

Anyone wishing more information on this line should contact Jeanette or me. Mention of this is expected to be posted on the Meriwether Society website.
