Surname inquiry from Mike Mirrilees

I found your name via the Meikle family website in Ayrshire and I am very excited to ask a few questions about the surname Merelie. What is the earliest record you have of the name and what variant spellings are in those early records? I have not come across this spelling before and suspect that it is a variant of Merrilees/Merrylees.

An ancestor of mine, Robert Merilees married Helen Meikle at sorn in 1815, they had three boys betweem 1819 and 1824, William, James and Robert.

In 1994 I formed the Merrilees Family Assoc. to learn about the collective history of the people with this name, Fast forward ahead to 2008 and we have had DNA tests for every known branch in the English Speaking world to find that we are all closely biologically related. We have held an International Gathering every 5 years since 1998 and have an annual gathering in nearly every English speaking country.

I suspect that the origins of your name and mine are the same. There have been 130 variants found in Scottish records and the following are still in use;

merilees, merrilees, merrillees, mirrlees, mirrilees, mirrielees, merrylees, mirylees, mireylees, etc.

I am keen to locate a few records which have been elusive. The oldest ancestor in my tree is William Mirrilees who married Mary Stivenson in 1771 in Lesmahagow. There I hit a dead end as I cannot determine where they are from, where they were born and where they went after Lesmahagow. The above Robert/Meikle is the son of this couple married in Lesmahagow.

If you are part of this line, a great deal more is to be learned. Often times branches link up with sibs and a paper trail develops. Very exciting stuff.

Please check out the website and please email me back at Mirrilees@cs.com

I am 50 years old, live in the Chicago area and can add a lot of information to what o already know of your family. We have very extensive genealogy and we share it freely with anyone of our name.

Write back soon, I am eager to learn something new.

Warm Regards,

Mike
