"Ralph Thomas Merchant was born April 16, 1917, to Wilford and Anna(Langan) Merchant in Owatonna, Minnesota. He graduated from Owatonna High School. He served in the Army Air Force during WWII as an aerial photographer in Ireland, England, France and Germany. Ralph and Gladys Meyer were married November 7, 1941, in Sacramento, California. After marriage they lived in Sacramento, California, Seattle, Washington, Rochester, Minnesota, Kasson, Minnesota, Sleepy Eye, Minnesota and Tyler, Minnesota before purchasing the Westbrook Sentinel and moving to Westbrook in August 1968. In January of 1977 they purchased the Walnut Grove Tribune and combined the two papers in 1985. He sold the newspaper January 1, 1995. Ralph was a member of Westbrook Kiwanis Club, Westbrook VFW Club, American Legion Post andhe served on the Westbrook City Council several terms. Ralph was veryinstrumental in getting the Rolling Hills Golf Club built. Ralph’s number one enjoyment was golfing. He also enjoyed sports, watercolor painting, directing and singing in the church choir. Ralph Thomas Merchant passed away Saturday, September 9, 2006, at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, Minnesota at the age of 89.
Survivors include his wife Gladys,Westbrook, MN; son Thomas (Junette) Merchant, Westbrook, MN; daughterSuzanne Merchant, Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren: Joe, Jason and Jeff Merchant and David and Renee Senst and a great grandson Jeremiah. Preceding him in death were his parents; son James; two brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 16, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Westbrook. Burial in Westbrook Cemetery. Westbrook Funeral Home in charge of arrangements."
