What would you like to know? I have a copy of a Family tree that takes this merchant family back to Scotland in the 1600s. There were 3 Merchant brothers who tried to overthrow the king. The ringleader got his head cut off and the two others were banished to America, landing in Dumfries, VA. Drumfries was a major American port for about 50 years and then silt became a problem.

Jacob Merchant (the one you inquired about) was born Aug 9, 1786 in Dumfries, VA. He married Margaret "Peggy" Waters on December 24, 1807. We went to the old Dumfries cemetary and saw her grave, the stone is broken, but there.

Let me know what else you would like to know, or I could e-mail you a Family Tree Maker report. A lady named Susan Merchant compiled most of this research, but I could not get in touch with her. He aunt didn't know where she was. My husband's mother was a Merchant. Are you a long lost cousin?
