This is what i have on Thomas Mercer. All i had before you posted is just his name and wifes name. What i have found was on the internet including your post.
Most of the work was done by Don Mercer who was noted for his hard work and documentation on the Mercer line.
I have added your info to the line already so thats why you will see it under Thomas Jefferson Mercer.

Thomas J. Mercer was elected Captain in Company E, 42nd Georgia Infantry Regiment of the CSA (Harpers Guards of Newton County, Georgia). He enrolled in the Confederate Army as Captain on March 4, 1862. He was captured at Vicksburg, Mississipe on July 4, 1863, and paroled there July 7, 1863. Thomas was sick in a hospital in Atlanta on October 31, 1863. His brothers, James and William served in his company.
Listed as a farmer in 1860 Newton County census, with wife, Frances Caroline, and children James L., 11, Augustus L., 9, Levi A., 8, Thomas, 6, Elizabeth, 3, and Mary, 6 months.
Burial: Buried in Westview Cemetery, Monticello, Georgia (May have died December 1894 instead of October 1884.)
