Edmund Montgomery Mercer was named after Edmund Montgomery Vick a full cousin, the son of Step hen Vick and Susannah Mercer Vick.
Typhoid fever was the reason for the deaths in this family in 1881and thereabouts. James B. Mercer was working on a railroad and took sick. His brother Silas L. went to take care o f him and bring him home. However, he died before he could get him home alive. Then Silas too k sick and died with the same disease. Their brother David and his wife Sarah both died about t the same time. This was Estil Porter mercer's father and mother; he was only a baby at the time. (This is the will that David Mercer's mother wrote just prior to hermarriage to Zephania h Harrison. After David received his part of theestate he came to Illinois.)
It is my opion that the heirs of Shadrack Mercer could not settlehis estate until his yo ungest child Elizbeth became of age. she was bornin 1797. then it probably took several yea rs. there was property inGreene County, North Carolina to be disposed of, roads and communic ationwere bad, this would account for the delay in settling the estate.

Zephaniah harrison and his wife are listed in the census of 1830 inMuhlenberg County, KY . It list their ages as 60-70 years each. Thiswould indicate that David Mercer's mother wa s born between 1760 and 70.
................................

David Mercer came to Illinois alone in the summer of 1826 in search ofnew land. He picked a l ocation on the Northeast side of Tennessee Prairiein section 15 Raccoon Twp., Marion County , Illinois. It is said in ourfamily that the land he chose had to have some Cockle Burrs gro wing onit, because if it would grow these it would grow good corn. He returnedto Kentucky an d moved his family to Raccoon Twp., the following summer1827. they were his wife Elizabeth a nd their five children Wiley Green12, Mary Jane 8, Silas 6, Lucy Ann 2, and William Dudly th e baby aboutfive months old. edmund Montgomery a sone was born later in Illinois. They also b rought a grandfather clock, which has wooden works. It isstill in the family, and an aged ne gro woman who was a slave. She isburied in the yard of the Silas Mercer home.
I do not know the route they followed, when they came to Illinois.there was a stage rou te from Greenville, Kentucky to Showneetown,Illinois via Madisonville, KY. Then there wa s a stage route fromShawneetown, Illinois North Westward to Alton, Illinois. This crossedth e Kaskaskia to Vincenes stage route at Walnut Hill. Tennessee Prairiestarts about five mile s Northeast of Walnut Hill. They probably cameover this route, in fact this is the only wa y they could of come unlessthey went around about way. this was a poor road but at least i t wasmarked and they could follow it.
David Mercer died June 14, 1834 in Raccoon Twp., Marion Co.,Illinois in the forty thir d year of his life. they buried him about athousand feet Northwest of his home, just acros s the branch on top of aknoll. (This is now Mount Moriah Cemetery.) His wife Elizabeth ifbu ried beside him. There is a marker on their grave. They continued touse this location fo r a burial ground, also camp meetings. On July 10,1841 the folk of the community met at th e home of the widow Morrison andorganized "Mount Moriah Church of christ". this was orginall y a BaptistChurch, but has been a Christian Church ever since. The KentuckyMercers' were Bap tist. They had held Church services continuously sinceit was organized. this church is surr ounded by ten acres of land, a partof which is used as a burial ground. This land is a par t of the originalfarm settles by David Mercer and was deeded to Mount Moriah Church by hisso n Silas and Wife Caroline (Gaston) Mercer on June 21, 1856. Theabove paragraphs were fro m Kenneth Mercer from Webster Groves, MO.

INFO: Don W. Mercer - Houston, TX[Mercers.FTW]

William Dudley Mercer's family moved from Muhlenberg County, KY toMarion County, IL the follo wing summer when he was five months old(1827). He spent the rest of his life there. His fat her died when hewas seven years old, his two older brothers wiley Green and Silas helpedrun t he farm and take care of the family until they grew up. they liveda quarter of a mile nort h of the Silas Mercer home at the forks of theroad just south of Moriah Branch.
William Dudley was a farmer, he also rana general store and postoffice at Raccoon, Illin ois. William dudley, his brother Edmundmontgomery and a nephew Samuel David Mercer (son of W iley Green) ownedand operated a thrashing machine during the 1850's. Raccoon or "CoonTown" a s it was called locally was located in the center of what is nowthe clover leaf at the inter- section of Interstate U.S. 57 and stae route161. this is on the east side of Tennessee prair ie in Raccoon Twp., atthe Junction of the Old Salem-Mt Vernon road and Centralia-foxville roa d.(now state road 161)
Raccoon was a thriving pioneer settlement in its day and served theneeds of the folk i n the surrounding community. there was a generalstore, Post Office, blacksmith shop, a gris t mill and a cabinet shophere. there were four old wells on this location when He was a bo y justbefore World War I. There were probably four or more houses here duringits existance . Each cabin didn't necessarily have its own well butcarried water from the nearest one. Un cle Ott Mercer owned this propertyand he filledup three ofthese old wells to keep the stock f rom falling inthem. The elections for Raccoon Twp. were held there. they sold realestate lo ts in Raccoon at one time and thought they would build a town. When the railroad came throug h Centralia it left them high and dry andthey never realized their ambitions.
The Post Office was established in Raccoon, Illinois on January 27,1849. John Parkinso n was the first Postmaster. He died Dec. 15, 1864.the Post Office was in the General Store a t least when William Dudley wasPostmaster. Edgar Benjamin Mercer had the old pigeon hole cab inet theyused in the Post Office at Raccoon. Emmaretta parkinson was thePostmistress when i t was discontinued on October 10, 1900. she was thedaughter of Brown and Mary (Luety) parkin son and the sister of Louella(Parkinson) Mercer the wife of Ben Mercer. John Crane "Doc" wen t toSalem, IL twice a week and brought out the mail on horseback. the title"Doc" was bestowe d on him because he was the seventh son. He was alsothe blacksmith. Lindell Farthing ha d a cabinet shop in Raccoon. He madeChairs, beds, and tables among other things that were ne eded in thehome. Thegrist mill was run by Martin Moore at an early date.
John William Mercer started housekeeping in a cabin on the southside of the road in Racc oon when he was first married. Four of theirchildren were born there, Nellie Belle, George W illiam, Margaret, andMollie Lora.
The settlement of Raccoon flourished for a while then vanishedcompletely. Ott Mercer op ened a store and filling station there and ranit a few years. it got to much for him in hi s declining years, so hediscontinued it. since then they have built an Interstate highwaythe re. Now one hundred and fifty years later they are building inRaccoon again.
There was always a question in the family as to whether he died anatural death or was mu rdered. He went to Centralia, IL to transact somebusiness in connection with the store and P ost Office. It was the latterpart of February and the roads were very bad. He went on Horseb ack. After he had transacted his business he got some money in change andcurrancy for his stor e and placed in his saddle bags and started home toRaccoon which was about eight or nine mile s. About three miles out justbefore he got to Cedar Hill it came up a very bad storm, rain , sleet, andsnow. He stopped at a house on the north side of the road just west of asmall cr eek and asked to stay all night. they gave him his supper andput him up for the night. Abou t eleven o'clock he took violently illwith cramps in his stomach and died in about thirty min utes. theynotified his family the next morning that he had taken sick in the nightand died . However, there was no money in his saddle bags when his familywent to get him. The bank v erified the fact that he had the money andthat he started directly home from the bank. He wa s a strong robust manin the prime of his life with out any ailments that his family knew of.T he family never knew if he died of a heart attack, or was poisoned, although they suspected th e latter.

Generation No. 4

       8. Shadrach Mercer, born Abt. 1740 in North Carolina; died January 1800 in Edgecombe Co., North Carolina. He was the son of 16. Thomas II Mercer and 17. Hester/Esther. He married 9. Rhoda Price Abt. 1777 in North Carolina.
       9. Rhoda Price, born 1761 in NC; died 1831 in Muhlenberg Co. KY. She was the daughter of 18. Absalom Price.

Notes for Shadrach Mercer:
[Mercers.FTW]

Shadrach Mercer was born in Craven County, North Carolina about 1740if not earlier. This i s based on the fact that he was a witness to adeed in Craven County, North Carolina on July 2 9, 1761. He would havebeen at least twenty-one years of age at that time for legal purposes. One thing which has hampered research on Shadrach is the relativescarcity of records from th e counties in which he either lived or hadbusiness dealings. several of these counties have s uffered fires in theircourthouses (Craven, Dobbs, Greene) and some records have been lost.
At the present time there is a break in the trail of Shadrach from1761 to 1767. Then h e is found in Pitt county as a witness to a deed;Remember this would be about five years afte r Thomas Mercer (Shadrach'sfather) moved there. The deed staaates that "Sullivant sold lan d tothomas (Pitt County, North Carolina Deed Book D, p.105, 1768).
Shadrach also appears as a witness to deeds in Pitt County in 1776and again in 1787. T he 1776 reference states that "Thomas Mercer andwife Sarah sold land to William Vimes." Th e deed names Christopher andJacob Mercer as brothers of Thomas Mercer and places them in th e vicinityof the sale. The references also also states that part ofthis land was agrant tha t had belongedto Thomas Mercer, father of the above named men.The deed was witnessed by Shadr ach Mercer, William Brantley and Thomasmercer (Pitt county, North Carolina Deed Book F, p. 16 5 March 7, 1776).Because Shadrach witnessed this deed and the one in 1768 (precedingparagraph ) it is reasonable to think he was also a brother ofChristopher, Thomas Jr., and Jacob and th erefore a son of Thomas Mercerof Pitt county. Another strong piece of kinship evidence come s from the1780 tax list for Dobbs County. This shows that Shadrach, along withChristopher an d Thomas lived within a few houses of one another in thevicinity of Waltonsburg and Speight' s Bridge. This portion of Dobbscounty was later named Glasgow County. Shadroach voted for m embers ofthe State Legislature in Glasgow County in 1793. The name Glasgow waschanged to Gre ene County in 1797. all this changing of county names canbe very confusing. Probably Shadra ch and his family stayed in the samearea throughout all the changes.
Shadrach appears on the 1790 Dobbs County census but isnot on the1800 listing for any co unty in North Carolina. it is thought he died inDobbs (Greene) County, North Carolina betwe en 1797 and 1800. He had fourbrothers and one sister: Christopher, John, Jacob, Amos and Ab igale"Abie" who married a Bergeron in Dobbs County. Shadrach married RhodaPrice in North Car olina around 1777. She was born in North Carolina in1761 and died in Muhlenberg County, Kent ucky between 1830 and 1840. Theyhad nine children four sons and five daughters.

Shadrach Mercer gave land to Meadow Primitive Baptist Church on SR 303,Walstonburg, NC 10/31 /1789.

After the death of Shadrach Mercer his widow Rhoda (Price) Mercer and herchildren removed t o Madison County, Kentucky in 1800. Her eldest son theRev. Martin Mercer a Baptist ministe r was married at this time and didnot come to Kentucky until 1816. Stephen Vick her son-in-l aw, whomarried Susannah Mercer and his brother Isiah Vick, who later marriedRhoda Mercer cam e with her and lived in Madison County until shortlyafter 1815 at which time they moved to Mu hlenberg County, KY. Hosea,Silas, David, Rhoda and Elizabeth Mercer were small children whe n theycame.

Most of the family except Hosea had moved from Madison County until 1832at which time he als o moved to Muhlenberg County. He was a widower in1830 with thirteen children, six sons and s even daughters. He marriedRachel Groves in Muhlenberg county in 1835.[128771.ftw]

About 1800 the widow and children of Shadrack Mercer moved from GreeneCounty, North Carolin a to Madison County, Kentucky. Source ofinformation-D.A.R. Magazine Vol. #70 page 878.

She was married three times. Her second husband was John W. Folks andher third husband wa s Jephania Harrison.

Rhoda Price Mercer, the widow of Shadrack married the widower John W.Folks of Greene Co., NC . He is found there in the 1800 Census.

Rhoda and John Folks left NC some time after 1800 and settled inMadison Co., KY. Most o f Rhoda and Shadrack's children went with them.David Mercer appears on the 1810/11 tax list s in Madison County, Hoseaand Martin in 1813 and Silas in 1814. These dates coincide fairl y wellwith the sons reaching their 21st birthdays (the point at which they wereeligible to pa y taxes). Martin mercer is an exception. He apparentlylived for awhile in Tennessee befor e joining his mother in Madisoncounty.
Hosea Mercer remained in Madison county and appears on the 1820 and1830 census records t here. The remainder of the family moved toMuhlenberg county, KY. in late 1817 or early 1818 .
The children of Rhoda and Shadrach are proven by the followingdocuments. The first is f rom Muhlenberg County Court Minutes, Book 2A,p.336, July 1820:

"On motion of Isiah vick it is ordered that a dedimus be awarded to John S. Eaves and Ed mund Watkins, Esquires for purpose of taking theprivy examination of Rhody Vick and Susanna h Vick, heirs ofShadrach, deceased, to certain instruments of writing thereinexpressed a nd report thereof accordingly."

Book 2A, page 264 of the Muhlenberg County Court Minutes, dated1820, refers to a "repor t of a commission to take the acknowledgement ofDavid Mercer aand otheers from them to Davi d Sarborough...." Thisrelates to the following minutes taken from the same book, page 365,da ted October 2, 1820:

"Report of acknowledgement of a conveyance from Shadrach Mercer'sheirs to David Sarborou gh."

A final document is taken from Muhlenberg Co. Deed Book 6, p.277,dated March 4, 1826: " indenture between Rhoda Folks, part of the firstpart and Stephen Vick (her son-in-law) and he irs of Dorcas Moore, lateDorcas Mercer, Rhoda Vick, Elizabeth Martin, wife of Samuel Martin . Rhoda Mercer Folks completed the above settlement of her property priorto her third marriag e to Zephania Harrison in Muhlenberg Co. on March 30,1826 (Muhlenberg Co. Marriage Book #1, p .65, Certificate #764).
