My email was typed into the form on the web-site, but I didn't understand that it did not go to you. It is [email protected]. Marge, I am grateful for your advice and I printed out your letter. The problem I have is that I do not know any family members. My father died in 1976 and he never discussed his past other than to comment occasionally about his mother, Jenny. I do not even know, for sure, if this is the correct spelling. There was a lot of anger and secrecy and I found out from my mother after he died that he had a brother named Bill and that is ALL she would say.She is now dead, also.
We were the only Mercer family in this area for years; My father was born in Eastern Ky in 1900. The only leads I have are that, the fact that I heard him mention Pleasant View once, I know his mother and father divorced and he was unruly and passed back and forth between them. I am a full days drive from that area and I dream of going there some day to look for clues, buy finacially it is not possible. That is why I dreamed of a computer when I kept hearing more and more about the internet. I will have to do it this way mostly and rely on people like yourself to help.
To show you how secretive he was: I always knew I had a half-brother, Lewis, who lived in New York. There was a picture of him in Naval uniform among the few pictures we had. His wife,Penny, would send a Christmas card sometimes and My mother talked to her on the phone a few times that I remember, but no one would say why this man never talked to his father or came to visit. He and our father parted ways when he was a youth and for 50+ years he never spoke to or saw him again. I met him when I was 40 years old and traveled to New York on business. I had a map of the area and I realized I was 20 miles from where he lived so I called...Thank God he was in the phone book...and he said Yes! would love to meet you. It was such a wonderful visit, but he was ill and died of cancer a few weeks later. He told me interestng stories, but he knew little in terms of family facts.
I need to find Mercers in the Eastern region of Ky at the turn of the century, and I have found a few interesting leads, and go from there to make connections. Every puzzle resolution begins with placing two pieces that fit together and going from there. That's what I must do.
God bless and I look forward to hearing from you. Many, many thanks for your reply.
