I have an Edward William Mennig who was born in Friedensburg, PA around 1835 or so. He served in the Civil War from 1861 to Sept. 1865 in seiges of Charlston and Petersburg. He died in 1920. His father was Jacob Mennig who was reportedly the 1st surveyor in the county and was also a justice of the peace.

If you think there is a connection with your Johan, I could email you a copy of the source of my info (obituaries from Pottsville newspapers that my mother saved).
