I too am looking for Karl Menke, about the age you described. I find 2 possible records relating to him: The 1860 census for New Orleans, LA, lists him as Carl Mankie, with a child, Elizabeth, age 5. The census also spells his name as Mankie. The 1860 mortality census lists Elizabeth Mankie as dying that year. The 2 records were originated by the same census taker. The Menke's birth places are Hannover and Prussia. These are my great, great grandparents, and I have nothing else on them. The family story is that the child, Lizzie, was raised in a Catholic orphanage in New Orleans. I find no supporting records on that. She went to Galveston and worked as a seamstress until she married James Johnson of Norway in 1879. Her obituary says her father was Carl Henry Menke. I would dearly love to identify her parents. Joyce Louis, Bryan, TX
