As a post WWII baby boomer child, I was always intrigued by seeing this sign in the windows of the Mom and Pop stores in my neighborhood. Those signs were even appearing by the early 1960s.

My take on this is that it was easier to pass up butter than to mix some white ball of animal fat with a yellow die. It was easier to load a Civil War musket rifle.
