I would like to echo Fred's appreciation for our WWII veterans' service to our country.

My dad wasn't drafted, either, because he ran a farm and a dairy, but many of Mom and Dad's relatives and friends did serve in the military. I am just old enough to remember when they left and how they returned home.

Most of those who returned home alive didn't often talk about their war experiences, but I remember well that when my mother's brother returned home, he came to our home every night for about three weeks. He talked, cried, and drank beer until he fell asleep. Of all of the people we knew that participated in that war, Uncle Joe fared the best the balance of his lifetime. And, he never drank another beer as long as he lived.

The Historical Office, Department of Army, says that Uncle Joe's award of seven bronze stars is most likely a record for any one soldier for a single war.

I don't think we thank our veterans enough.

Betty
