WW II Veterans

Just want to wish the best to Bill Smith and any other WW II Vets that visit here on ML. ....Those are the people that secured freedom for most of Europe, the UK and the American continent. They are all to be honored.

I was a "War Baby" of '42 and my dad worked in a critical industry, the railroad, so was not drafted into service. While growing up in a section of Dallas TX, though, I recall many of my friends that had dads in the service and some did not return home.

My parents large, shady side yard was the favorite gathering spot for our neighbors and their kids in the Summers. They would bring their ice chests, lawn chairs, blankets and watermelons. We kids would just all roam the area playing games and chasing lightnin' bugs until worn out after dark. ....(no a/c in those days, so everyone stayed up and outside to catch a breeze and allow the houses to cool down a bit before trying to sleep inside)

Lying on those blankets near the adults, who by that time had imbibed sufficiently, we kids heard a lot about what the military veterans in the crowd had seen and endured. Listening to their stories influenced my life and I joined the Naval Air Reserve early in my senior year of high school; going on active duty a year later.

I had many teachers/coaches who were WW II Vets during all of my public schooling. They were very stern but fair and as I've aged I have come to respect them even more!

There aren't too many WW II Vets like Bill Smith, a fellow Texan, left as it seems that age is reducing their ranks.

Please honor the military Veterans who have helped to preserve our nation, regardless of their periods of service.

Fred
