Dear Rebecca, Of course the historic reason was State's rights vs. Federal rights. Then as you immediately went on the explain, the reason this was a problem was because of slavery. They were also arguing over whether new territories in the west should be 'slave' states. Maybe Gary can mail you "The Hemmings of Monticello" after he reads it. Jefferson thought he was a wonderful master, but he still broke up families. Would you like your child sold? Early on Jefferson had a plan for gradual emancipation of slaves. He then realized this was political suicide so he changed his tune. It really was a fascinating, well-written and documented book. Also it was amazingly non-judgmental. As I read it I alternately thought what was Jefferson thinking, what were the Hemmings thinking and what was the black author thinking. As I said in a previous posting the Emancipation Proclamation was a political tool to try and end a horrible war. Sincerely, Sherry Notify Administrator about this message?
