Dear Shelly,

You are on the right track. Keep the genealogical activities ‘age appropriate’ and always fun. I really messed up when I had my daughter page at hereditary societies when she was about 13. She was treated like a servant and she never forgot it.

Let’s face it; a 12 generation fan chart is boring.

A great project for even a young child is photos of family and ancestors. Make copies and let her paste them on a tree. Let her write in ideas, in crayon. “Mommy likes to go to rock gardens; Daddy likes to fish; Granny Smith always smells like violets …” I realize this is too advanced for a three year old but you get the idea.

The one thing I did that my daughter was interested in was a matrilineal photo line. I realized I had photos of my matrilineal line, all with the women about age 20, for five generations. There wasn’t software to do that, which I now think was a plus, so I did it myself. So I had five photos of five women about age 20 going up a legal size piece of paper with names and dates in small print under the photos. It was amazing the resemblance to see it together on one piece of paper. Even though the hair, eye and skin tone changed, you could see the resemblance. This could be modified for any age or really any family group. However when you get ‘massive’ a child or un-interested sisters will glaze over.

Enjoy the process and Merry Christmas,

Sherry
