Check out the 1850 census of Wolf Pit, Richmond County, North Carolina. There were a few families of "Love's" in among the 50% of the population that was labeled 'mulatto's'. They were not mulatto's at all, but the census takers only had 3 choices to label someone with, white, black or mulatto. Most blacks in 1850 were not listed in the census. Research has shown these families were called 'Croatans' who came to the area from Sampson and Robeson counties to work in the turpentine industry. Some of them made their way up into Stanly County by the 1870 and 1880's.
