The general early population of the Appalachia is very distinct, the Irish, Scotts Dutch as well as others. Left somewhat isolated from the faster moving America around them, the customs flourished. That is a rich culture of, the clans, the kinship, music and forget not the whiskey. You can still find plenty of green eyes and red hair in those mountains. Though these mostly European protestant immigrants are very unique they kept traditions from their culture and community in Europe but I don’t think anyone could confuse them with any other culture. Hollywood even loves them.
