MaryE:try "the new river notes" in your search they are a wealth of information that you would love to read and in them you'll find people and places you though you would never find, try emory l hamilton's writings about the indian raids, he's compiled about 50 or 60 such incidents and blackmore/blakemore's fort is mentioned several times, washington co va records will give you a landslide of info also....I've been studying for about 6yrs now about those old settlers, the indians, and what they did, it was a very different world once you passed over the break in the mts and came down the rivers, it was not only beauitful but dangerous, there were wild animals who wanted to eat you, indians who as often as not be your friend or scalp you just depending on what mood they were in, and bandits that if they caught you alone would murder you for the few things you had including the close on your back, just to survive was a hard job, those old settlers held court in the road, there was very little room or time for mistakes.....jim
