Hi there, Kevin. Thank you so much for your reply to my question. I've been reading LOTS about the Melungeons, and all manner of Native American genealogical websites, simply because I'm trying to trace the true precise origin of one Eleanor COCKE, who on the register of marriages is named, "Neely COCKE," and might have been known to her immediate family as either Elender or Ellender. And of course, that surname could be: Cocke, Cockes, Cock, Cocks, Cox, Coxe, Coke or Koch, as well as other more elaborate spellings. Apparently, that surname can originate ANYWHERE. One thing I know for sure is that most of my ancestors from that part of my family all were close associates of Daniel Boone. I was too young at the time I learned that, to have thought of asking anything else. LOL. Anyway, long ago, it seemed to me that since my Blakemore & Douglass ancestors seemed to have crossed paths not merely with Daniel Boone, but ALSO with the melungeons, and since there are so many Cockes & Coxes involved in the same general area of time & space, that perhaps I was having difficult with this specific Eleanor Cocke because perhaps she was Melungeon. Phil Crowther's website about Charles Cocke shows her to possibly be the daughter of Jester Cocke, and possibly the granddaughter of Charles Cocke. Anyway, I guess I decided to hone in on the Blakemores - to find any & all associations with ANY Cocke/Cox family - and proceed once again from there. I have, meantime, acquired the book, WHEN SCOTLAND WAS JEWISH, and ..... guess I am struck speechless. Kevin, thank you again for your kind reply, it's been very confusing to find the Blakemore Family, whom it was my distinct impression are fully researched and well documented, suddenly turn into Black-A-Moor Crypto Jews who are hiding behind a mirage facade of Methodist Episcopalianism. OR... something, Can't you just *hear* Elizabeth scream, "But M.A.R.A.N.D.A!! Your very name means 'Marrono.'" LOL = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = You wrote: I hate to say it publicly, but since there's no way of emailing you privately, the answer to your question "when did the Quaker Boone family become Jews?", is basically "when Hirschman wrote it in her book". You can read Hirschman's book for yourself, but as someone who's spent well over a decade researching the families that were called "Melungeons" (by others), her book has VERY LITTLE to do with such families, and I seriously doubt if there is any factual information on Jewish families there either. I suggest Pat Spurlock Elder's book "Melungeons - Examining An Appalachian Legend". Notify Administrator about this message?
