I am searching for Sarah Manes, born 1797-1801, possible North Carolina, ended up in Sevier County, Tennessee. She appears in the 1830 census, with her children, in the household of David McMahan, of Sevier County,Tennessee. She last appears in the census in 1840,just under the listing of a white woman named Phebe Pemberton, listed as FPC. Her eldest son, David M. Pemberton, claimed in the census he was born in Virginia or North Carolina. Her next to eldest son, Daniel P. Pemberton, was born in Sevier County about 1834. In a Goodspeed interview he said he was "born of North Carolina" parents, however, did not name them. Her youngest child was born about 1842. After the death of Sarah, David C. McMahan raised these children, listed as FPC, in his home. Sarah Manes is our brick wall we cannot break down. Some think she was "the widow Manes" but I have not found anything about her except the census. Anyone doing research in East Tennessee finds that some counties had courthouse fires durning the Civil War and all records lost, which is exactly what happened in Sevier County. I am pretty sure she was not a FPC, nor an Indian, as she was living in the heart of the area where the Indian removals were in full progress and also during a time when FPC were being removed from the state as well. Anyone have any ideals or new information will be greatly welcomed. Notify Administrator about this message?
