Jeanette, I just don't remember exactly. I know I did not grow up knowing the word. Maybe it was after I married and lived in Texas and had a friend and neighbor who was Elvis Presley's first cousin through his mother. She said that the Melungeons were trying to claim him as one of their own....:-) She said the family sure got a kick and a lot of laughs out of that invented notion....:-)

You know Melungeon is NOT a common word around here. I'll bet not one in a hundred here would even know what you are talking about. Even Redbone is an uncommon word here...meaning people.
