Jim,

Your assessment seems an implacable suspicion. It seems apparent the history of the suspect surnames which have brought you, MaryE and myself to this forum are what cause such expansiveness. Larry Keels' attempt to define "melungeon" along with historically similar exonyms seems actually to narrow the focus of who was historically denigrated by which particular complexion related slur. That your own free people of color were not referenced as "melungeon" seemingly does not impede the value you find in the information shared here.
