The Croatan Tribe was already rated and noted as mixed White blood. There was no need to make a story of Portuguese blood for citzenship priveledges.. They were well noted already as having Angalo Saxon type White heritage. What would be the point of making up a story of having another racial type? To what benefit would it serve? Absolutly nothing.
Let us cross referance and compare the largest Portguese communty in the United States the the Portygees as they call themselves in the Hawaiian islands from the begining of organized government to the late 1880s the Azroreans and Madirans continued a constant flow of immimgration to Hawaii.

After 5 generations of immgration to Hawaii the Portuguese continued to maintain thier language sur names culture ect.
Yet the [melungeons croatans] claimed the portuguese element came from a maternal line.. after 5 generations any vestiges of Portuguese elements were simply lost to Southern Croatan culture. Except the genes and family genealogies..
As said they were already noted as part White there was no need to produce a Portuguese a story to avoid discrimintion or to achieve citizen benefits. The Croatans and Melungeons same people A name of a Tribe of Native people. Obviously the name was adopted by other tribes partially related for example the Goodmans..
All you need to know is the Croatans called themselves Melungeons in North Carolina in South Carolina Redbone. The maternal lines came from some sort of Portuguese ethnic group.
Remeber this page is for genealogy ,not terminalogy. Therefore it our duty as family genalogits and hobbyists to explore the the genalalogical statements made by eders. Who did not have the benefit of modern technology to conduct research.
Theres point of having a pessamistic attitude of going into difficult research. A base structered open mind is needed without a pessemistcic outlook attitude. Exploration like that will produce no valued achievemnet.
